Ash Wednesday services will be held in front of the corporate office of the Salt River Project (SRP). The ashes used in the service will come from the Kayenta mine in northern Arizona which supplies coal to the 2,250-megawatt Navajo Generating Station. Speakers will be representatives of the faith, Native American, and medical communities.
The event, sponsored by Arizona Interfaith Power & Light—a religious response to climate change— will raise issues of personal transformation and public transition from coal to more sustainable forms of renewable energy. Speakers will address the health impacts of polluted air, our addiction to fossil fuels, the impacts of climate change here in Arizona. For the sake of our State’s natural environment and for the health of our children and grandchildren, we will strongly encourage the Board of SRP to invest in solar technology rather than the continued burning of fossil fuels.
