Eastern South Dakota is part of the Prairie Pothole Region of the Northern Great Plains. Small wetlands that we call potholes provide many free services to us, including erosion control, water purification, ground water recharge, and recreation. Potholes are sometimes called “the kidneys of the landscape” because they clean the waters that flow through them. South Dakota still has 70% of its natural wetlands whereas drainage in surrounding states has left only about 10%, hence the drinking water quality problems in some areas and expensive programs of municipalities to clean up drinking water. The SouthDakota legislatures is considering management of water on a watershed basis rather than a County basis. Good! Potholes and Preaching? Wasup? Well we are all neighbors in a watershed and we should do what is best for the folks downstream. As Christians, we have an obligation to make all our choices with compassionate concern for our neighbors next door, down stream or down wind from us (Lev. 19:16-18; 1 Chr. 28:8).
