Grace Lutheran Church in Yorktown NY will be observing Earth Day Sunday on April 19, in advance of Earth Day’s 50th anniversary on April 22.  However, since one day isn’t enough, we’re dedicating the whole weekend to Earth Day!
We will start by hosting our 8th Repair Cafe in our Fellowship Hall on Saturday April 18.  What do you do with a broken toaster?  Or with a bike when the wheel runs out of true?  Or with a sweater full of moth holes?  Toss it?  No way!  At our Repair Cafe, everything centers on making repairs.  From 11AM to 3PM, various volunteer repair experts (about 1/2 are congregation members) will be available to help people make all possible repairs free of charge.  Tools and materials will also be on hand.  Visitors will bring their beloved but broken items from home (limit 2 items, please – and no gas-powered items).  Lamps, toasters, bikes, clocks, clothes, toys, wooden items, crockery, jewelry, computers / electronics… anything that is broken is welcome.  And can more than likely be repaired.  The Repair Café specialists almost always have the know-how to determine whether your item can be repaired, and if possible, make the repair.    By promoting repairs, we can help reduce mountains of waste which otherwise ends up in landfills.  Repair Café is also meant to put neighbors in touch with each other in a new way.  And to discover that a lot of know-how and practical skills can be found close to home.  Above all, Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is.  If you’d like information about bringing a Repair Cafe to your congregation / community, please contact sarahdwilson@optonline.net.

Also on Saturday, Grace’s chartered Boy Scout Troop 174 will be participating in the 32nd annual “Battle of Yorktown” roadside litter cleanup.  This annual event calls on volunteers to help Yorktown stay clean & green by picking up unsightly roadside litter.  Our Boy Scout troop has been a consistent presence, cleaning up our little corner of the planet.

On Sunday, April 19 our Sunday School students will be assembling “seed bombs” containing native wildflowers that they will be able to bring home and “launch” wherever they think some flowers would be welcomed.

During both worship services we will include prayers for our planet.  After each worship service, we will have “Faith Climate Voter Pledge Cards” and stickers on our hallway table and in fellowship hall during coffee hour in recognition of Faith Climate Action Week.

Lastly, after our late service, congregation members will volunteer to clean up roadside litter in our Grace Lutheran Church “Adopt-A-Highway” section of US Route 6.
