The 4th Sunday of Easter, April 17, is traditionally the “Good Shepherd Sunday.” We’ll tell the story of two amazing congregations in Arizona who bear the name “Good Shepherd” and highlight what they are doing to care for Creation and build resilient communities. Good Shepherd Episcopal Mission on the Navajo Reservation is facing the dramatic impacts of climate change, including prolonged drought. Most families are not able to grow the corn that their grandparents grew. They fight for water rights and against uranium mining and air pollution from coal fire power plants. The Good Shepherd mission has a world class greenhouse and a permaculture, organic garden. They practice no-till agriculture and crown Miss Navajo not only for her beauty but for her skill at tending, fleecing and butchering sheep. The Good Shepherd United Church of Christ in Sahuarita patrols the desert looking for lost immigrants, distributes live-saving water, and tries to save the lives of the hundreds of immigrants who die in Arizona deserts every year. Their Open and Affirming ministry to LGBT not only talks about welcoming gay, lesbian and transgenedred people but also teaches about Black Lives Matter and Islamaphobia.
